While the eight SDG 6 targets are fixed by the UN, they are the same for all countries, there is room to “domesticate” the indicators for the country circumstance. The global SDG 6 targets must therefore be localised and adapted to the country context. National governments must decide how to incorporate SDG 6 targets into national planning processes, policies and strategies, and set their own targets, taking into account local circumstances.

This process allows South Africa to advise the UN that certain indicators cannot be reported on, or are not applicable within our own unique environment. South Africa also has the opportunity to add indicators.

A further area to be developed is data related to effective water resources management. Quality data underpins good water governance and management thereof. It is an area that can be improved across the sector. Currently, less than half of the member states have comparable data available on progress made towards SDG 6 targets. One of the challenges facing South Africa’s effort to meet SDG 6 and its targets is the fragmentation, consistency and availability of reliable data.

There is also a need for an effective monitoring and evaluation system to reflect on progress through the indicators and influence further intervention. The great work that is being completed must be benchmarked from the start of the process; monitored and measured in term of progress on a continual basis; and with a system that provides information regarding areas that require further attention besides those areas that are on track or ahead of the curve.
